  • Understanding pH in Car Care: What It Means and When to Use Each Type

     

    The pH scale

    Most water-based car care products sit somewhere on the pH scale, from strong acids like iron removers to strong alkalines like snow foam pre-washes. Solvent-based products like tar removers and some sealants are non-polar, so pH doesn't apply to them at all. For the products that do carry a pH, two things usually get missed: how much a single pH point actually matters, and which contamination each end of the scale is actually built to handle.

    The scale is logarithmic, not linear

    pH runs from 0 to 14, with 7 as neutral. It's tempting to read that like a ruler, where the gap between pH6 and pH4 feels the same as the gap between pH9 and pH11. It isn't. The scale is logarithmic, based on powers of 10. Each single step away from neutral represents a tenfold change in strength, not a small, even increment.

    Both moved the same "distance" on paper, but what that distance represents is enormous in either direction. It's why treating pH5 and pH3 as roughly the same acid, or pH10 and pH11 as roughly the same alkaline, is a mistake: pH5 is 100 times gentler than pH3, and pH11 is 10 times stronger than pH10.

    Why the direction matters, not just the number

    pH doesn't just tell you strength, it tells you what a product is actually built to remove. Contamination on a car generally falls into one of two chemical families, and each family responds to a different side of the scale.

    Acidic

    Dissolves mineral and metal deposits, iron fallout, brake dust, water spots, limescale and rust staining, since these are all inorganic in origin.

    Alkaline

    Breaks down organic grime and oils, road film, traffic grime, bug splatter, engine bay oil, by hydrolysing proteins and emulsifying oils.

    For maintenance, not correction. Safe on coatings, sealants and PPF, but not built to dissolve anything stubborn.

    A strong pH number doesn't mean a product is harsh or risky to use as directed. Acidic and alkaline don't equal "dangerous", they just mean "formulated for a specific job."     Why treating pH loosely causes real problems

    Dilution ratios matter more than they seem. Because strength scales exponentially with pH, a small change in how concentrated a mix is can shift its effective strength by far more than the ratio number suggests. That's part of why the dilution guide gives specific ranges rather than "eyeball it."

    Mixing acid and alkaline products can cancel each other out. An acidic product applied straight after an alkaline one (or the other way round) doesn't necessarily compound the effect, it can neutralise it instead, since the two are working in opposite directions on the same scale.

    Heat accelerates all of it. Chemical reactions speed up as temperature rises, so a strongly acidic or alkaline product on a hot panel in direct sun isn't just "a bit riskier," it's reacting meaningfully faster than the same product on a cool panel. Always work in the shade, on cool paint, with anything sitting outside the neutral range.

    A "dead" coating is usually a dirty one, not a failed one. Coatings are hydrophobic, so water beads and rolls off, but the minerals dissolved in that water don't always roll off with it. Over weeks, mineral film builds up on the surface, hydrophobicity drops, and the coating looks and feels "finished" even though it's still there underneath. A neutral maintenance shampoo like Semper is formulated to be safe over that coating, which also means it won't dissolve the mineral film sitting on top of it. An occasional acidic wash (Purifica) is what actually clears that buildup without stripping the coating itself.

    Read a product's pH before you use it
